Sweet & Spicy Mole Chili

Updated: Oct 17, 2024

Like mole, this chili’s rich, sweet-spicy sauce is enhanced by a touch of cocoa powder and cinnamon. This is the perfect dish for anyone tempted by sugary Halloween treats, because enjoying a meal with a bit of sweetness to it can make it easier to steer clear of candy. Serve with lime wedges to add a tangy flavor that enhances the chili’s sweet-spicy flavors.

This recipe also doubles as a delicious and easy way to use up leftover Thanksgiving turkey. Just replace the ground beef/substitute with a pound (about 2 cups) of chopped cooked turkey, and prepare the recipe as directed.

Ingredients:

1 (12-ounce) package ground beef or ground beef substitute

1 medium onion, diced

1 tablespoon bottled minced garlic (or 3 garlic cloves, peeled and minced)

2 (14-ounce) cans black beans, drained (or substitute with beans of your choice)

1 (14-ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained

1 (14-ounce) can tomato sauce

2 tablespoons chili powder

1 tablespoon cocoa powder

2 teaspoons ground cumin

1 teaspoon dried oregano leaf

¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

2-3 dashes ground cayenne

Lime wedges, if desired

Directions:

Cook beef substitute, onions, and garlic over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally and breaking up beef substitute into bite-sized pieces, until onion is tender, about 10 minutes.

Add beans, tomatoes, tomato sauce, chili powder, cocoa powder, cumin, oregano, cinnamon, and cayenne powder. Stir to combine.

Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Cook for 20 minutes.

Serve hot with lime wedges, if desired.
