If you're seeking a way to talk to your child about narcissism, I’m excited to share that my first children’s book, Camila and the Blue Butterfly, has been published, and it’s available for sale on Amazon.com!
Camila and the Blue Butterfly is one of a series of books I’m writing, all of which are designed to help parents teach the positive psychology skills children need to thrive.
Camila and the Blue Butterfly gives parents an engaging, age-appropriate way to teach children about the immature ego defenses of displacement, projection, and denial. Knowing how to identify and address displacement, projection, and denial will benefit your child in a variety of contexts, from bullying to friendships to sibling relationships, and even your child's own self-talk.
If you live with or share joint custody of your children with a person with narcissistic traits, it’s a tightrope act every time your child talks about the other parent's immature behavior. On the one hand, you want to explain to your child what’s happening when the other parent acts like an emotional 4-year-old. You don't want your child to blame themselves for the other parent's behavior. And you want your child to have the emotional skills they need to manage the other parent's behavior.
On the other hand, you want to be careful how you discuss the other parent’s behavior with your child. Camila and the Blue Butterfly explores typical childhood experiences, so it’s a comfortable, nonjudgmental way to teach your child why people use immature ego defenses, talk about your child’s experiences, and explore how your child can thrive, regardless of how others behave. Your child can then apply what you teach them indirectly to their relationship with their parent with narcissistic traits.
Because the examples used in the book are drawn from everyday childhood experiences, your child can immediately apply the skills to their own life. Every time your child reads it, you’ll be strengthening your child’s thriving skills, and setting your child up for relationship success as an adult.
And every time you read it with your child, you’ll be reviewing and reinforcing your own ability to identify and address these immature ego defenses, too. If you’re here because you have someone with narcissistic traits in your life, this book will give you a boost, so you can keep making the move from surviving to thriving!
Camila and the Blue Butterfly is written for elementary-aged children, but the engaging illustrations and familiar childhood experiences will appeal to teens (and adults), too. If your child is preschool-aged, this easy-to-read book will familiarize you with the immature ego defenses before you need to address them with your child. That’ll give you the head start you need to be a thriving-based parent!
Camila and the Blue Butterfly is available online for purchase on Amazon.com in paperback format. Kindle is coming soon, and I'll post to let you know as soon as it's available!
