If you're looking for a way to build your child’s self-confidence (and what caring parent isn’t?!), I’m excited to share that my second children’s book, Camila Meets Leila, is now available for sale on Amazon.com!
Camila Meets Leila is the second of five books in the KidsThrive! series I’m writing. Each of the books is designed to help parents teach the positive psychology skills children need to thrive.
Camila Meets Leila gives parents an engaging, age-appropriate way to teach children how to build self-esteem and self-concept. It explores how parents can enhance what they're doing to support their children, as well as what parents can do to build their own self-esteem and self-concept, too.
Every caring parent wants their child to have positive self-esteem and self-concept. When children move into adulthood seeing themselves as lovable and capable, they are able to choose healthy friends and partners, set healthy boundaries in relationships, envision and accomplish personal and professional goals, have strong receiving boundaries that allow them to not take in untrue, hurtful things others say and do, and much more!
In addition, research shows self-esteem and self-concept are key in helping children address bullying. Children with positive self-esteem and self-concept are less likely to be targeted by bullies. This makes sense, because if a child believes they are lovable and capable, they are likely to ignore bullying when it makes sense to ignore it. And children with positive self-esteem and self-concept are also more likely to ask for help when needed if they are (or someone else is) being bullied, too.
That said, it’s challenging to raise happy, healthy children with positive self-esteem and self-concept. Our culture tends to focus heavily on self-concept, and suggests that if you’re attractive enough, successful enough, powerful enough, etc., etc., then you’ll be lovable.
And while this has been true for as long as recorded human history, the internet has made it even more challenging for parents. For some people, going viral, getting likes and shares, and having thousands of subscribers means you're lovable and capable. When they don't experience internet success, it can be devastating to their self-confidence.
On top of the societal challenges, if you live with or share joint custody of your children with a person with narcissistic traits, the other parent's poor self-image makes it even more challenging to raise happy, healthy children with positive self-esteem and self-concept. They can't teach what they don't know! And parents with narcissistic traits engage in hurtful behaviors, like displacement, projection, and denial, that make it even harder for children to develop positive self-esteem and self-concept.
As Camila discovers in the story, parents are tremendously influential in helping children develop healthy self-esteem and self-concept. Happily, because the examples used in the book are drawn from everyday childhood experiences, you and your child can immediately apply the skills to their own life. Every time your child reads it, you’ll be strengthening your child’s thriving skills, and setting your child up for success as an adult.
Importantly, teens begin to notice if you say what mean, mean what you say, and do what you say. If your own self-esteem or self-concept is low, and you don’t see yourself as unconditionally lovable and see yourself as capable, it will be difficult for your teen to believe you when you say they are lovable or capable. After all, how can you talk about something you don’t know anything about?
So, if your own self-esteem and self-concept aren’t where you want your child’s self-esteem and self-concept to be when they’re adults, now is the time to work on building your self-confidence! Every time you read Camila Meets Leila with your child, you’ll be reviewing and reinforcing your own self-esteem and self-concept, too. Especially if you’re here because you have someone with narcissistic traits in your life, this book will give you a boost, so you can keep making the move from surviving to thriving!
Camila Meets Leila is written for elementary-aged children, but the engaging illustrations and familiar childhood experiences will appeal to teens (and adults), too. If your child is preschool-aged, this easy-to-read book will get you started with building your child’s (and your own) self-esteem and self-concept early. That’ll give you the head start you need to be a thriving-based parent!
Camila Meets Leila is available online for purchase on Amazon.com in paperback format. Kindle is coming soon, and I'll post to let you know as soon as it's available!
